Steven “Steve” McManaman (born 11 February 1972) is an English former footballer who played for Liverpool, Real Madrid, and Manchester City as a midfielder, winger, and playmaker. “Of all England’s footballing exports in the contemporary age, none has been as successful as McManaman,” according to the UEFA website. He is a frequent on BT Sport’s football coverage as a commentator. McManaman went to Real Madrid in 1999 after nine years with Liverpool, where he won the FA Cup and League Cup. The transfer became one of the most high-profile and contentious Bosman decisions of all time. In 2000, he became the first English player to win the UEFA Champions League while playing for a non-English team, and two years later, he became the first English player to win the tournament twice. Before transferring to Manchester City in 2003 and retiring from football in 2005, he won La Liga twice. He served as a football commentator for Setanta Sports, ESPN, and BT Sport after his retirement.
